Simple Swaps for Everyday Products to Save Money and Help the Environment! – Part 2
Ready for more ways to easily upgrade your everyday routine? If you missed Part 1 of our ‘Simple Swaps’ series, be sure to catch up on the Simple Swaps Part 1 Blog first. Then, dive into our favorite new household changes below!
- Turn perishable food into helpful staples that you can freeze, like pesto, stock, and homemade hot sauce.
- Keep a stash of gift wrap – bags and boxes from gifts that were given to you- and reuse those instead of buying new paper. You’ll be surprised how many bags, boxes, and wrapping paper scraps you’ll gather in a short amount of time!
- A set of beeswax wraps usually costs $10–$20 and replaces plastic cling wrap entirely. You can use them for snacks, leftovers, and food on the go. They’re easy to wash, easy to reuse, and when they lose stickiness, you can refresh them with a little melted beeswax.
- Insulated food containers can cost $10-$30, but packing lunches instead of eating out adds up quickly, especially with kids. Bringing food from home can save $150–$300 a year in lunches alone!
- Liquid soap is about 80% water, which means you’re paying for packaging and filler. Bar soap, shampoo bars, and conditioner bars are more concentrated and last much longer. One shampoo bar can last seven months, depending on the brand. This simple switch can save around $50–$100 a year and reduces plastic waste at the same time. You can also buy concentrated castile soap, like Dr. Bronners brand, and make a soap mixture of 1 part soap to 10 parts water. It works great in a pump soap dispenser too. Keep the same dispenser and just refill it with your 1:10 soap mixture!
- Shampoo and Conditioner bars can be found at Local Foods Plymouth (shop.localfoodsplymouth.org) by our local producer One Earth Body Care. Or see more at https://oneearthbodycare.com
