Making Your Home Comfortable & Healthy

We want our homes to be as comfortable as possible, but we also need to ensure they are healthy for us to live in.

Below are 10 elements of a healthy home and what to consider about improving your home’s health.
  1. Dry – repair any leaks and ensure your home is not damp for mold to grow
  2. Clean – keep your home clean to reduce allergy and asthma triggers. Minimizing cluster helps with cleaning
  3. Contaminant-free – use non-toxic pesticides (or avoid all together) and non-toxic cleaning products. Consider testing your home for radon and lead (if build before 1978)
  4. Pest-free – ensure your home is free from rodents and doesn’t promote entry
  5. Safe – install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and store chemicals safely
  6. Well-maintained – inspect and repair small issues before they become a major issue
  7. Well-ventilated – improve your air quality by ventilating your bathrooms, kitchen, and clothes dryer to the outside
  8. Energy efficient – caulk windows and doors, install LED lightbulbs and smart thermostats
  9. Thermally controlled – weatherize and insulate attics and walls and seal air leaks to prevent exposure to extreme cold and heat
  10. Electrify – reduce toxins and improve air quality by replacing fossil fuel appliances with electric versions
We are lucky in New Hampshire as we tend to spend more time outdoors engaging in the many activities of our surrounding area. However, we are still indoors quite often and need our homes to be a safe and healthy place.
