Caryn comes to her work at PAREI with a background in education, with a special focus on sustainability and place-based learning. She worked for fifteen years as a Spanish and science teacher, during which she partnered with many local nonprofits to bring real-life opportunities and lessons into the classroom. She is also passionate about gardening and has started school garden and compost programs to allow students to learn about sustainability issues and food systems in a hands-on way.
In addition to teaching, Caryn has worked as a Sustainability coordinator, designing and implementing school programs to educate the community about environmental issues and reduce the school’s carbon footprint. In her free time, she loves to explore the outdoors, whether on foot or on skis, and grow and cook delicious food.
